Humanity’s final hope

I’ve started playing Resistance : Fall of man on the PS3 in cooperative, with Tvvity.
The action takes place in an alternate reality, one in which World War II never happened and Lenin’s revolution was supressed, leading to Russia still being lead by a Tsar.
The introductive cinematic starts off the story with the news that the Chimera, species created deep into the Russian territory in the 1940’s after some biological experiments, have conquered in a matter of weeks the entire Europe, Britain being the last remaining free European country. After some time of fighting, Britain falls too. “The war was lost” – the narrator (a woman) tells us. She then recounts of an attack the Americans launched on the western coast of the U.K., and introduces Nathan Hale, an officer in the American army. She says we’ll be following the story of the days of 11′th to 14′th of July, the last day Hale was seen.

I think we’ve gotten to about the middle of the game (12′th of July) and, up to know, the game is really a hit. The enemies are both varied and clever, making it a joy and a thrill to shoot them out of our way. The graphics are excellent and the sound is very mood-setting and appropriate to the action you are experiencing. The multitude of weapons and enemies makes the game very dinamic, allowing you to choose a number of factors that will contribute to your victory, instead of just going and and thrashing your way mindlessly (although, I must say, you CAN do that, but it takes all the fun out of it – we managed to finish one level in about 2 minutes).
When we finish the game, I’ll post a complete review and more pictures.

PS2 turns seven

Yesterday, October 26′th, was Playstation2’s(PS2) 7th birthday.
The PS2 was the first (and only) gaming console to reach the milestone of 100 million sales worldwide – after five years and nine months from it’s launch -, having also sold over one billion (1 000 000 000 – ZOMG!) software items (that is, games and stuff).
Even though it’s been around for this long, last year alone it sold more that 30 million and up to March 2008 it’s expected to sell 10 million more.
“Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale,” said Peter Dille, SCEA’s senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation network.
“PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product life-cycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today’s anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2’s past, we’re very excited for its future.”
They claim they are still committed to a 10-year product life, revealing they still have 160 more PS2 games lined up for the period until it’s 10′th birthday to add to the more that 1400 already existing titles.
Since it’s launch, the best-selling PS2 games are the following :

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)

Now, for my story.
I’ve had a PS2 for about 6 years, having received it for Christmas, in 2001. It has served me well, and for that I have become kind of attached to it, as to an old friend and comrade. I own about 15 games, but I’ve played some 50 or 60 during these years.
The funny thing is, I think my PS2 is the reason I found out the true nature of Santa Clause (you know…well, I wont spoil it for all my 5-year-old fans :) ) ). It all happened a couple of days before the Christmas of 2001. I had been pleading with my parents for a couple of months to buy me a PS2, as I was a mini-hardcore-gamer even then. They told me it was too expensive, so I kind of let the idea of owning a PS2 go (it was 13 000 000 rol back then, so that was about 400$). Then, one evening, as I sat in my father’s study on his couch, I noticed a black box behind the couch. When I looked closer, it was a brand new PS2. Well, you can imagine the hype I felt, knowing that I was the only one who would want and use it. A couple of days later, for Christmas, I received a PS2 (surprised, huh?) and a couple of 10-year-old-fit games. This console made me respect and become fond of Sony. I still play the PS2 nowadays, although I’ve got it’s younger and more powerful brother, the PS3.

I think the PS2’s birthday wish would be that we all take a moment and think about it, or just go out and buy a PS3 or a PSP to make them get the edge over their respective competition.
I guess the PS2 deserves to be named “The Best Gaming Console Ever” and invite you all to join me in wishing it a well-earned “Happy Birthday!”.

Great champion passes

Today, a great man passed away: Nicolae Dobrin. Quote from Wikipedia :

“Nicolae Dobrin, nicknamed Gâscanul, “the Gander” (August 26, 1947 – October 26, 2007) was a Romanian football player, considered by many the best Romanian player of the 1960s and 1970s and one of the most talented players ever to play the game.

He was born in Piteşti, Argeş County, and he played for the first time in a Divizia A game when he was 16, on July 1, 1962, in the game between Ştiinţa Cluj and Dinamo Piteşti. He played for FC Argeş for 22 years, and only one year for another team, CS Târgovişte; Dobrin refused to play for any other First Division clubs, such as FC Dinamo Bucharest or Universitatea Craiova. Dobrin’s contribution was essential to the 1979 Championship win for FC Argeş, when his team won the championship by defeating Dinamo 4-3, the last goal being scored by Dobrin in extra time.

Dobrin played 48 games for the Romanian national team, scoring six times, and contributed to Romania’s qualification for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. However, he did not play in it even though he was in the finals squad.

During his whole career, Nicolae Dobrin played 409 matches, scoring 111 goals in all. He was named three times the best Romanian player, in 1966, 1967 and 1971. He played his last game on June 14, 1983, when FC Argeş faced FC Bihor (the match ended 2-0 in favor of FC Argeş). In 2007, Dobrin was the technical director of FC Argeş.

He died in October 2007 at the intensive care unit of the County Hospital in Piteşti. This came as a result of multiple organ failure, in turn caused by lung cancer.”

Sadly, he didn’t manage to dribble past death this time.

A great champion during his life, Nicolae Dobrin will remain a bright memory for all of us.

What console shall Santa choose?

It seems Sony is definitely putting up a fight for this winter’s top console seller place. The announcement that the 400$ 40Gb version of the PS3 is coming out early in November (2nd) brings along a price-cut of 100$ to the 80Gb version, taking it’s price down to 500$. The discontinued 60Gb version that isn’t being produced anymore since this summer currently retails at 500$ – I guess it will fall to …what, 450$, after the aforementioned 40Gb version comes out?
Everybody has been (to be honest – pretty justly, I’d say) criticizing Sony for it’s sales strategy this past year so this move is going to be something of a breath of air for the company’s future image (and customers, for that matter).
Hold on a second! Why don’t we do an updated comparison between the PS3 and the Xbox360, to see what it’s going to come down to this Christmas, because I’ve the vague impression that Sony’s offer is getting more and more tempting, even for the keen-on-buying-360 potential customer.
Conveniently enough, I have stumbled upon just such a chart, completely updated. Here it is :

Well, seems like judging by this here chart, the PS3 overall surpasses the 360 (one may even say that it PWNES the 360), considering the fact that anyone would need a minimum hard-drive for all those demos, infinite saves and other media, that you would eventually buy a WiFi adapter for the Xbox (come on, I mean who WOULDN’T want to play online in front of any TV in the house, regardless of cord length?) and that the yearly subscription to the Xbox Live! is 50$, as opposed to the free online potential offered by the PS3. So, even ignoring the 180$ extension to play HD-DVD movies on it (PS3 has free included Blu-Ray support) the Xbox kind of gets to about the same (or even higher) price that it’s PS3 counter-part – comparison made at the same capabilities level. Makes me wonder… is a surprise in store for this year’s Christmas? Can Sony make up for all the mistakes it has done up to this point in the eyes of the fans? Only time shall tell…

For the gaylo lover in us all…

GayLO – insult found one a console-war-related forum – evidently refers to the famous franchise Microsoft started a couple of years ago, Halo.
Seriously now, Halo is one of my favourite game franchise. I totally adored the original Halo : Combat Evolved on my PC. One of those revolutionary games that changes your view on gaming in general.
Today I remember an animated series produced by the guys over at Rooster Teeth that used the game-engine of Halo to create a lovely and full-of-tasteful-jokes story of two sides (representing the two sides in Halo’s multiplayer mode) battling for domination in the Blood Gulch (Halo map). I am proud to present you :
Red Versus Blue (RvB)
Some time ago, I watched some of their episodes… I laughed my *s* off (*s*= Ps3, of course – PG rated blog, remember?) so now I want to pass on the fun brought by these guys’ work. Here is the first episode :

If you want to see more of it, head over at Quicksilverscreen and you’ll be able to watch seasons 1 through 5 of it, free (remember : FREE…do not comment as to the quality of the videos). Enjoy!

Dumbledore?! ZOMG!

I read it a few days ago, but still thought that it would make a nice news-related post:

Dumbledore is gay!

Yep, you heard (read, actually) it right! J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series (if you didn’t know that, then you have lived in vain), said in an interview that our favourite headmaster has been, for most of his life, gay. She also mentions that he cared for Grindelwald more that you average best-friend would… read on to get proof:

“After reading briefly from the final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds “true love.”

“Dumbledore is gay,” the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. “Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” Rowling said of Dumbledore’s feelings, adding that Dumbledore was “horribly, terribly let down.”

Dumbledore’s love, she observed, was his “great tragedy.” “

I’m shot! (a.k.a "Un fleac! M-au ciuruit!")

Another victim in the next-gen console-war : me.
As you already know (if you’ve cared enough to have read my posts), I’ve been researching for a while now. All that research seems to have paid off. About a week ago, I decided to buy a next-gen console. “Why?”, you ask? Because I had been reading so much about it that I thought I knew all the advantages and disadvantages, both for now and for the future, and I got sooooo hyped that I decided the console that I had to own and abuse for a couple of years would be… ta-da-da-dam… yes, you’ve guessed it, the PS3!

I got it – Starter Pack – on thursday from the local Mall for a whopping 1900 RON (that’s about 800$).
I know, I know, “You’re one crazy Sony fanboy!”. Actually, no. At least you can’t call me a Wii-tard or a Gaylo lover (in fact, I do like Halo – a lot), or any other Wii or 360 related insult for that matter. *sigh* Ok, bring on the flaming!
Well, I’ve had it for almost 4 days now and I’m damn proud of it. They didn’t have Resistance or an extra controller at the store anymore, so I’ll have to pay them another visit next week to pick those off. I purchased Warhawk, so I can only currently play that and Motorstorm, which came with the Starter Pack.
What can I say? The PS3 compelled me to buy a HD-Ready Tv (I’m thinking of writing a guide to buying an HDTV, actually). I think it a blasphemy, a sin to have a source like a PS3 or an Xbox360 and not connect it to a HD-compliant Tv, instead playing it on your tiny couple-of-decades-old 4:3-ratioed CRT. A sin, I tell you! THE LORD SHALL SMITE YOU, O, BLASPHEMOUS ONE! Being a God-fearing mortal that I *still* am (even though I own a PS3 – shouldn’t that, like, make me a gaming mini-god or something??), I chose, after careful deliberation/googling, LG’s 32lc51 to do my bidding.
I must say, one fact that upsets me is the lack of support Sony has for many european countries. I was anxiously waiting to enter the Playstation Store and download some free demo’s or other free content, but it seems that Romania hasn’t got a Store of its own. That would be just fine with me, if it wasn’t for the fact that Sony doesn’t allow you to access any other country’s Store but yours. That implies that, unless you have an account with a location of a Store-supported-country, you can’t get any Sony free content. Not fair, one would say! I searched for a solution and found out that one can have multiple accounts, so one can add an account with an american, let’s say, residence. That enables the use of that country’s Playstation Store. “Finally!” I said…now I’m downloading about 6 almost-one-gigabyte-sized demos that’ll help me choose my next games.
Also in the news, I’ve found another sales-counting site which states that Wii is, in fact, the market leader. About time, I say! I give you, VGCHARTZ!
I hope I’ll get around to writing some reviews of all the new features and also of the few games I’ve managed to play so far on the PS3, but for now, “sayonara”!

In the trenches

Well, folks, after numerous nights spent on the internet researching every consoles’ ups and downs, I’ve come to the following conclusion, based on one’s choice of console:
-you’re either interested in the future, in next-gen games with next-gen graphics, in online capabilities and next-game movie viewing; this case is split into two parts : the Xbox 360 part and the Ps3 part; in this case you can either wait and save up some more $$ and then go and get PS3, or buy the Xbox360, thinking “Wow, it’s got more games than the PS3…I am just going to ignore the fact that it doesn’t come with a HD-DVD player, included wireless network support or free online browsing – true, this is only a few bucks away – (and if I ever want that, I’ve got to spend some big bucks *which I think will make it as expensive as the PS3*)…but hey, who needs that? It’s got MORE GAMES!!!111″; or
– you’re simply interested in having a good time and lots of fun during your time out from school/work, in which case you’ll choose the revolutionary Wii as your best-friend and ally;

The above represent my opinion and my opinion only, do not take them as facts or insults to any of the god-companies by the names of Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. (To be read: blabla…*subliminal message: either buy PS3 or Wii*…blabla..*subliminal message*…disclaimer)

Right now I’ve got to go to school to gather more knowledge to help me in my *secret* plan of world domination…*insert creepy Mandark-like laugh here*mwhuahahahaha!

"Le Roi est mort. Vive le Roi!"

“The King is dead. Long live The King!” (explanation) :

Wii LOST FIRST PLACE!!11!!

As incredible as it may seem, the guys over at NextGenWars
say that Wii has been overpowered by almost two thousand consoles, thanks to the 360. Their extrapolation-based pseudo-live calculation system gives us the following data :

(15′th of October, 2007, 0000 hours)

Xbox 360 – 11,886,442 units
Playstation 3 – 4,848,624 units
Wii – 11,705,658 units

Well, honestly, I can’t really seem to deal with this situation now, so I’ll just continue with my denial phase… *starts talking to himself* wii is still first-place, wii is still first-place, wii is still…

to be continued …
